I thought that the first episode of Joss Whedon's (Buffy) new sci-Fi series Firefly was pretty good. It's sort of like Wild, Wild West with Han Solo and in reverse (they're actually in the future at the edge of known space, which has an uncanny resemblance to the dusty American frontier). (Do I perhaps detect a bit of borrowing from Cowboy Bebop as well?) Try it out.

New worst movie I've ever seen: Ballistic: Eks vs. Sever. (Previous title holder: The Musketeer.) I won't even link to it because you might just see it to see why I said not to. Just don't. It should have been titled America's Most Continuous Explosions.

I flew back to see my parents and extended family over the weekend. As usual, one of the computers wasn't quite working right; we couldn't get the scanner working. Did critical updates, updated the driver, etc. etc. Nothing worked until I forcibly told it to use what appeared to be the "wrong" driver. Anyway, this experience is a ritual at Mom and Dad's. This, however, is nothing compared to this series of technical disasters. I hate computers.

Summer movie box-office results (at bottom of page). Road to Perdition was better than its take would suggest. Signs was worse (though it wasn't a bad movie) and XXX was right on. Don't even talk to me about Star Wars: Clone Attack!

Postcard Update!

The Right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, but not the Right to Food?

[...] the U.S. delegation announced that it would not sign a final summit declaration referring to food as a human right, or that left out a central role for genetically modified food in ending hunger. Readers may recall that the United States was the only nation that refused to sign the final declaration of the 1996 World Food Summit because it contained a reference to the right to food, which, according to U.S. negotiators at the time, would have "made welfare reform illegal under international law."
