Lawmakers of both parties have said they didn't know the provision had been slipped into the Patriot Act reauthorization bill, and both chambers have voted to repeal the change.
Congresspersons:
  • If a bill is so large, complicated, or confusing that you don't know or understand what's in it, DON'T VOTE FOR IT.
  • Find out who "slipped" that provision into the bill and publically excoriate them. Perhaps their constituents won't vote for them again.
  • Explore changing your rules so that unrelated amendments can't be attached to arbitrary bills. The line-item veto would diminish them, but would also have other strange effects.

Grindhouse (IMDB 8.3|Rot 81%)

Quicky Review:

Loved Rodruiguez' Planet Terror: tastelessly gory, funny, sexy, goofy, and earnest. Didn't like Tarantino's Death Proof: pointless, uninspired, and boring. Where Planet Terror felt like a real movie (if a grade-B splatterfest), Death Proof just felt like Tarantino shot film until he drank his six-pack and then just went with whatever crap he had.

Anyway, I didn't feel angry about the 7 bucks but you might take a tip from my Mom and sneak off to another movie when Death Proof starts. :-)

After watching about two hours of the new show Drive I have determined that it... sucks. The basic idea is that there's a secret, illegal cross-country road race. The kicker is that some people are being forced to play by the nefarious group running the race via kidnapping, threats, and so on.

  • No car chases.
  • No wacky antics.
  • Unlikable contestants.
  • Stupid situations.
  • Pointlessly complicated subplots.
  • Not Cannonball Run.

It's simply uninteresting (even with Mal from Firefly as a lead).

It takes itself much too seriously. Using some kind of evil alchemical transmutation, it has taken the idea of a secret, illegal road race (intrinsically exciting, fun, intense, etc) and made it feel labored, slow, and forced.

Note for screenwriters: a twist isn't when you just take the plot and do something random. A twist is when the groundwork has been laid all along and everything changes due to a sudden shift of perspective.

Went to see Mom, Dad and extended family for Easter, which was pretty cool. Except for the Death Flu/Sinus infection I got the last day I was there. I've been sick with fever off and on all week. And it's not over yet. Wah.
