Foamy
Christmas Radio [high] [low]

So I'm watching too much TV on this Thanksgiving. I am being specifically NOT thankful for SciFi channel's new infatuation with "Ghost Hunters". It's as bad as it was when they went on the "Crossing Over with Jonathan Edwards" kick. Every day is practically a marathon of the damn show. But that's not what this post was supposed to be about.

This post is about the commercials I've seen on this year's opening to the Christmas season.

  • Kohl's opens at WHAT THE HELL TIME tomorrow? Yes, 4am. Tacky, not to mention insane.

  • The new Tickle-Me Elmo doll does WHAT?! Elmo's special new moves are a secret, you'll have to go buy one to learn his mad crunk. Yes, his body is greatly pixelated so we can't see what he's doing. Yes his head is not. It looks for all the world like an advertisement for Girls Gone Wild.

Lest you think I'm joking or exaggerating: Elmo TMX bares all on YouTube

  • Abilify: "If you experience movement which cannot be stopped, alert your doctor as it may become permanent." Yow.

Foamy Christmas Radio up and running. I'm on a cable modem now, so I might run into bandwidth issues. Try the "low" bandwidth version if it gets choppy, and if that still doesn't work send me an email.

For those who don't know, Cryptic sold Cities to NCSoft. The entire live development team for Cities now works for NCSoft. They are still in the building for a while, even, so the change shouldn't be too disruptive on the game itself.

It's bittersweet, as you might imagine. They gave us money. We gave them full ownership of the game and IP.

Arthur & George, Julian Barnes

I just finished A&G, a hand-me-down from rv (from 4th?). It begins as interleaved biographies of Arthur Conan Doyle (doctor and creator of Sherlock Holmes) and George Edalji (solicitor and wrongly accused of livestock mutilation). The second half of the book is about Doyle's crusade to unravel the mystery behind the crimes Eladji has been blamed for and clear his name. Surprisingly, the mystery itself didn't hold my attention as much as the lives of these two men and how they intertwine (or don't).

It's "literature" and Barnes deftly explores what it means to be an Englishman, the purpose of religion, not to mention the Edwardian worldview without being too "literary". I liked it, though I felt that some parts dragged a bit.

Joss Whedon back on TV? If I read the pitch right it sounds like "Behind the Scenes of Fantasy Island". :-)
